Former professional footballer Diego Forlan experienced a 6-1, 6-2 defeat in 47 minutes during his inaugural professional tennis match, a doubles event held in his home country of Uruguay. Forlan, a 45-year-old former striker for Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, and his Argentine partner Federico Coria, were defeated by the Bolivian duo Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos. Their participation in the Uruguay Open in Montevideo was made possible by a wildcard entry. This tournament is part of the ATP Challenger Tour, which is one tier below the primary ATP Tour. Forlan expressed his feelings, stating, “I hadn’t even imagined, let alone dreamed of this,” as reported by claytennis.com. He added, “It’s wonderful to have played against professionals.” The match began with both teams successfully holding their serves. However, Arias and Zeballos soon established a lead after securing a break in the third game of the opening set. Despite significant vocal encouragement for Forlan, the second set unfolded similarly. Forlan and Coria found it challenging to contend during their opponents’ service games and were unable to secure any break points. Forlan commented on the experience, saying, “The atmosphere on this court that I love so much was incredible; my friends, my family were here. It was very special, and I enjoyed it.” He further remarked, “I felt like a tennis player for a moment.” Throughout his football career, Forlan secured trophies with Manchester United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Internacional, and Penarol. He also received the Golden Ball award as the top player at the 2010 World Cup. In his younger years, Forlan demonstrated potential as a junior tennis player. After concluding his 20-year football career, he resumed playing tennis more consistently. He participated in the Montevideo club league with friends and made his debut on the ITF Masters Tour in 2023. His doubles partner, Coria, was ranked 49th in singles last year and has a history of reaching the third round of the French Open. Forlan expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to play with Fede.” He acknowledged the challenge for his partner, adding, “It’s not easy for him to enter these tournaments with an amateur beside him.” Forlan represented Manchester United in 98 matches between 2002 and 2004.
