A well-known roadside landmark in Devon has undergone minor refurbishment, its first in several years. The orange elephant, typically situated in a field adjacent to the A38 close to Kennford, was taken from its customary location in late October. According to Rob Taverner, co-owner of the adjacent Orange Elephant Ice Cream Parlour, the statue was removed to be “spruced up” with paint for the first time in approximately four years. He indicated that this maintenance was initiated after feedback regarding its deteriorated appearance. The elephant is anticipated to be reinstated beside the A38 this Sunday. This specific elephant sculpture has been located next to the A38, close to the intersections with the M5 and A30, since 2018. Mr Taverner commented: “Kids really like it in particular as I think they see it as one of those roadside landmarks which lets them know they’re nearly home.” He added: “It has become so well-known and it is a simple icon that has become a part of Devon.” For updates, follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
