A sculptor from Derbyshire has crafted a soldier figure from a 7ft 3ins (2.2m) wooden log in observance of Remembrance Day. Ben Yeates, 43, who resides in Whitwell, Derbyshire, dedicated seven weeks to the creation, employing a chainsaw to shape the log. The artwork, titled “a Soldier’s Tear,” is intended to represent a British soldier, commonly known as a ‘Tommy’. Its design draws inspiration from military personnel who served in World War One and World War Two. Regarding his creation, Mr. Yeates stated: “I wanted to do something big that was impressive and create something for people to remember who fought for our freedoms.” Mr. Yeates described the process of creating the sculpture as his “hardest carving yet.” He commented: “As I have only been carving for a year, I don’t have enough equipment to cut a log that size as my chainsaws are too small.” He further added: “I’m glad I got through it and pulled it off and I’m over the moon with it.” He also noted: “I’ve had nothing but great feedback, people have been gobsmacked when they walk past my workshop and see it.” The name, “a Soldier’s Tear,” was chosen to highlight the individuals lost on all sides during conflicts throughout history, according to Mr. Yeates. He remarked: “There’s no need for war and this sculpture stands in solidarity with those who have been lost.” Mr. Yeates indicated that the soldier will be positioned outside Whitwell Social Club for the weekend of the remembrance service.
