A man from Derby has stated that extending his driveway has enabled him to incorporate “more madness” into his yearly Christmas lights exhibition. Martyn Bosworth, 62, and his wife, June, have been adorning their residence on Muswell Road, Mackworth, with thousands of Christmas lights since 2017. This effort aims to collect funds for the Macmillan Ward at Royal Derby Hospital. A month prior, Mr. Bosworth acquired four metres of land from his adjacent neighbour. He indicated that this additional area has allowed him to install a greater number of festive lights compared to prior years. The area previously used for parking his vehicles now features light-up presents, reindeer, and an operational tractor operated by an inflatable Santa Claus, all arranged by Mr. Bosworth. Following the passing of his brother-in-law, Darren Wragg, from prostate cancer in 2017, Mr. Bosworth expressed his desire to expand his lights display “more and more” to generate funds for the ward where his brother-in-law received treatment. Last year, Mr. Bosworth collected over £11,000 for the Macmillan Ward, and this year’s display has already generated £3,000. He stated, “People love to come and see the lights and hopefully they will want to donate some cash after seeing why we are doing it.” Mr. Bosworth, who operates a waste management business, mentioned that assembling the display, which encompasses a Santa’s grotto, penguins, rainbows, and a giant teddy bear, required over a week. Additionally, he installed two levels of scaffolding on the right side of the house, topped with a large Santa figure. Regarding the increased number of lights compared to the previous year, Mr. Bosworth commented, “It’s just more madness, eventually it will get to the point where enough is enough.” He further added, “This year I felt like we have really smashed it.” Jen Bonshor, a neighbour to the display, remarked that Mr. Bosworth’s endeavours are becoming “better and better every year.” Mrs. Bonshor stated, “The money they raise is amazing.” She also noted, “It’s a bit chaotic but it’s for a good cause and it’s only once a year.”
