Paul Warne, manager of Derby County, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving manager in the Championship. He has stated that he is “well aware of the enormity” of the upcoming Friday fixture against Portsmouth, which will take place at Pride Park. The Rams recently concluded a three-match losing streak by securing a goalless draw against third-placed Burnley on Tuesday. However, the team has achieved only a single victory in their last 11 games. The home match for Derby against Portsmouth, a team positioned four places and four points below the 17th-placed Rams, marks the East Midlands club’s third game within a six-day period. This demanding schedule began with a significant defeat to high-flying Leeds United seven days prior. Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Warne commented, “It would be remiss of me to say that our season won’t be judged by Leeds away but will be judged by any team in the bottom half at home.” He further added, “It is a big game, you do want to win. We do need a win and we do need a good home performance and coming into the Christmas period it would be great if we can get this win.” Following consecutive home defeats to Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday, the away fixtures against Leeds and Burnley presented significant challenges for Derby, as anticipated. In both matches, the Rams adopted a strategy aimed at containing their opponents, resulting in only one shot on target in each game and limited control over the play. Although they departed Elland Road without any points, and Warne expressed his frustration by stating he only had a “League One team with a sprinkling of sugar” facing a Premier League-quality opponent, they did succeed in securing a point at Turf Moor. Warne stated that Derby will need to perform at their “very best” to conclude their six-game winless streak with a victory against Portsmouth, a team to whom Derby finished runners-up in the League One title race last season. Portsmouth will visit Pride Park positioned just one point and one place above the relegation zone. They arrive following a four-game unbeaten run, which includes two victories, stretching back to 9 November. When questioned about whether the match against Portsmouth, a team also near the bottom of the table, possesses “more edge” compared to the fixtures against Leeds and Burnley, Warne responded, “It has got that element.” Warne further commented, “I’m not that guy who is going to say it is a 12-pointer or anything crazy like that. But its the same way for Portsmouth, they will look at this game as a good win for them.” He also stated, “It’s too early to start looking at who you are competing with, but I’m aware that every game is crucial.” “We have to try to get the best out of our players and perform well against a very good team. So I’m well aware of the enormity of this game,” he concluded. Regarding the sequence of three challenging matches, he indicated that this particular game is where they must secure all three points or deliver a strong performance to create an opportunity for themselves.
