The demolition phase, intended to clear the way for a new leisure attraction in a town, has been suspended and might not recommence until the following year. Redcar and Cleveland Council announced that additional design work is required before construction can proceed at the location of the former Marks & Spencer and Goodwins stores on Redcar’s Esplanade. The authority, which is overseeing the initiative financed by the government’s Town Deal fund, also indicated the necessity of securing agreements with adjacent properties. This process is anticipated to take place over the next two months, after which demolition can resume, enabling the construction of the leisure site, which will feature tenpin bowling, mini golf, laser tag, climbing walls, and a cultural hub. The Local Democracy Reporting Service notes that some residents have voiced criticism regarding the site’s current appearance, questioning the lack of activity and the removal of heavy plant machinery. The council had previously acquired the buildings, situated between the Esplanade and the High Street, with a town deal steering group developing plans for the site, including a new public space. The construction project is also slated to incorporate a new home for the town’s central library, which is currently located on Ridley Street. A statement issued by the council acknowledged the “pause” and explained that the initial phase of demolition had allowed for investigations into the condition of surrounding walls and structures. Earlier in the year, a council officer informed a scrutiny committee about complications that arose from the discovery of asbestos within the buildings slated for demolition. The M&S store in Redcar closed its doors in 2014, and the building was subsequently placed on the open market with a guide price just under £1.3 million. The council purchased it in 2021, while the discount retailer Goodwins also later relocated as a result of a similar agreement reached with the authority.
