Permission has been granted for the demolition of a city tower block, which is in poor condition and has exceeded its “design life,” to clear the site for the construction of new homes. William Malcolm House, comprising 112 flats in Coventry, is scheduled for demolition in 2025. This action is part of a £21m regeneration initiative in Wyken, undertaken by Citizen Housing. According to an update released earlier this year, the housing provider had initially made the decision two years prior to rehouse the residents and proceed with the demolition of the 1960s tower block. On Tuesday, the city council gave its approval to plans for the construction of 60 new homes on Attoxhall Road, replacing the existing structure. An officer stated that the authority raised no objections, noting that the building “does not have any historic or architectural merit that would warrant its protection”. The group disclosed that temporary protection measures were recently implemented at the block following incidents where concrete fragments detached from its facade. Demolition work on the building is scheduled to commence in May and conclude in November 2025. Citizen Housing confirmed it is collaborating closely with the residents of the flats to assist with their relocation, anticipating completion by summer.
