A man from Birmingham, Myles Grennan, was inspired to establish a new company specializing in spice blends after discovering his deceased mother’s recipe book in his attic. Mr. Grennan stated that reviewing the old notes evoked a profound connection to his heritage. He remarked, “It brought [my mother] back to life in a way. Like she was there with me again.” His friend, Halle Faraj, who recalled using spices with her Saudi Arabian grandmother, joined forces with him to establish Camelēr Spice Co. This venture has gained popularity at food markets. Additionally, they are collaborating with Aston University to research the health benefits of spices. Collette, Mr. Grennan’s mother, had previously forgone a career as a chef in Ireland to raise her family, passing away in 2002. He discovered her cookbook during the lockdown period, initially believing its contents would not be exotic. However, he revealed, “In fact, she had worked at high end country houses and hotels in Ireland and France having created and executed menus with dishes like chicken liver parfait, curry lamb and rice, nettle and parsley pasta, Jersey Bean Soup and Cold lemon souffle.” Ms. Faraj possesses numerous recollections of her grandmother instructing her on blending and grinding spices in Saudi Arabia. Despite being illiterate, her grandmother possessed a remarkable memory for spices, relying on taste and experience for her blends. Ms. Faraj stated, “She had this incredible ability. She could taste a dish and just know what it needed.” Prior to the pandemic, Mr. Grennan resigned from his corporate position, and the business partners subsequently started experimenting with traditional recipes to develop new spice blends. With assistance from Aston University, the duo is currently exploring the full potential of their spice blends. Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.Copyright 2024 BBC.
