A high-school football field, intended for pre-Christmas festivities on Wednesday, is now associated with a tragic event. On that morning, 35 children lost their lives in a crowd crush, which occurred after thousands gathered due to an offer of free food. The grounds of the Islamic High School in Bashorun, a suburb of Ibadan in south-western Nigeria, are strewn with children’s sandals, damaged books, and broken desks. These common items, left behind during a panic, serve as a stark reminder of the victims. The concept of providing some happiness during a period of economic hardship likely appeared beneficial to the organizers of the event, which was promoted as a funfair. The organizers, identified as a local radio station and a charity associated with Queen Naomi Ogunwusi, the former spouse of the Ooni of Ife, a respected traditional ruler, reportedly announced plans to give out food parcels to the initial 5,000 attendees. Certain families journeyed for as long as 90 minutes, arriving prior to sunrise on Wednesday to ensure their participation. Lanre Kadiri, the zonal coordinator of Nigeria’s Emergency Management Agency, stated, “Some people slept at the school gate a night before the event because they wanted to be among the first 5,000 that would be given access to the carnival. Before 06:30, the venue had recorded the estimated number.” According to Bashorun residents who spoke to the BBC, the number of people quickly surpassed 5,000, with many attempting to push through the school gate. Reports indicate that parents also tried to climb the fence enclosing the premises to enter. Within a few hours, chaos reportedly spread through the gathering, leading to some children being knocked over amidst the resulting commotion. Olumide Adeniyi, a local resident, arrived at 09:00 to observe the situation. He captured footage on his phone of a distraught woman shouting that her child had passed away. “I’m finished. Why did I even come here?” she exclaimed while positioned at the school gate. Mr. Adeniyi recounted, “A man came to the carnival with two children. He told me one had died while the other was being treated in a nearby hospital for injuries.” The event organizers are currently in police custody. Law enforcement officials assert that they had not been notified about the event and were therefore unable to provide guidance on crowd management and safety protocols. However, local residents appear hesitant to assign blame, expressing a belief that the funfair and the charitable distribution plan were conceived with good intentions. President Bola Tinubu has mandated an investigation. He stated, “Our children’s safety and well-being remain paramount. No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives.” Nevertheless, the extent of poverty in Nigeria suggests that similar incidents could recur. Over the past 18 months, food and transportation expenses in Nigeria have increased by more than three times. Global inflation has been worsened by certain government policies, such as the termination of a fuel subsidy, which were intended to bolster the economy in the long run. Mr. Adeniyi commented, “People are suffering. It’s because of the situation of the country. It is the hunger that made them come out en masse like that.” Post navigation Malaysian Businessman “Fat Leonard” Receives 15-Year Sentence in Landmark US Navy Bribery Case Court Hears Accused in Elianne Andam Killing Had Anger Issues
