A tribute fund established by two daughters following their mother’s passing has accumulated over £27,000 in a decade. Becky Rowland passed away in 2014 at Prospect Hospice in Swindon, prompting her daughters, Michaela and Kristy Rowland, to initiate fundraising efforts for the organization shortly thereafter. Throughout these years, the sisters, alongside their supporters, have completed approximately 1,600 miles through various challenges and organized a multitude of fundraising events. Reflecting on their mother, the sisters stated: “She had a real love for life. One of the biggest things is that she had a huge heart as well – she really loved people.” Ms Rowland was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, subsequently undergoing treatment and achieving remission. However, the cancer recurred the subsequent year, accompanied by an inoperable brain tumour, giving her only months to live. Michaela clarified that their decision to support Prospect Hospice stemmed from witnessing the care provided by the staff to their mother, leading them to establish the Becky Rowland Tribute Fund. “We really wanted to make a promise to mum that we would keep the fundraising going,” Michaela stated. She added that their efforts commenced with 10k runs and subsequently “escalated.” She further commented: “The past 10 years, although it has flown, has been lovely to have so many things to focus on, even during Covid, thinking of ways to carry on.” Among the activities undertaken have been marathons, skydives, and a 100km run completed by Kristy’s partner. Prospect Hospice, located in Wroughton, just outside Swindon, offers its services free of charge to patients in the region, with 75% of its annual operating cost of £8.5 million covered by donations. Michaela expressed her belief that her mother would be “really proud” of her daughters, adding: “It’s easy to keep the momentum up for a few years and then it fall. “We know Prospect needs us more now than ever, we hope that other people that are touched by the amazing magic that the hospice provides will do the same thing.” For updates, follow BBC Wiltshire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
