West Indies cricket has confirmed the appointment of Daren Sammy, a former T20 World Cup-winning captain, as the head coach for all formats. Sammy has already been leading the white-ball squads since May 2023. Sammy, who previously guided the Windies to T20 World Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2016, will expand his coaching role to include Test cricket starting April 2025. This move will see him succeed Andre Coley in the Test coaching position. During Sammy’s tenure, the West Indies’ T20 ranking has improved from ninth to fifth, achieving 20 victories in 35 matches. This includes successful home series against England, India, and South Africa. Additionally, the one-day international team, under the guidance of the 40-year-old former Windies all-rounder, has secured four wins in seven bilateral series. Dr. Kishore Shallow, president of Cricket West Indies, commented on the decision, stating, “Daren Sammy has demonstrated exceptional leadership during his tenure with the white-ball teams. His vision, dedication, and ability to inspire players make him the ideal candidate to lead across all formats. This appointment marks a bold and exciting step forward as we strive to elevate West Indies cricket to new heights.” Sammy’s inaugural Test series as head coach is scheduled for June, facing Australia. Andre Coley, who oversaw the West Indies’ notable victory against Australia in Brisbane, is set to continue his role for the two-Test tour of Pakistan in January. The Jamaican coach will aim to enhance his current record of two wins, two draws, and seven defeats, accumulated since assuming the position in May 2023, prior to his handover to Sammy.
