Local authorities in Mozambique have reported that Cyclone Chido has claimed the lives of 94 individuals since its arrival in the East African nation last week. The National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management (INGD) of the country indicated that 768 individuals sustained injuries, and over 622,000 people were impacted in various ways by the natural calamity. On 15 December, Chido struck Mozambique, bringing winds reaching 260 km/h (160mph) and delivering 250mm of rainfall within its initial 24 hours. This same cyclone had initially caused extensive damage in the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, prior to its progression towards Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. Within Mozambique, the storm impacted northern provinces, which frequently experience cyclones. Its initial landfall was in Cabo Delgado, subsequently moving further inland to Niassa and Nampula. The nation’s INGD reported that the cyclone had consequences for both the education and health sectors. Over 109,793 students were affected, and school infrastructure sustained severe damage. According to the INGD, approximately 52 sanitary units suffered damage, thereby jeopardizing access to crucial health services. This situation is compounded in regions where healthcare facility access was already restricted prior to the cyclone. Daniel Chapo, who leads Mozambique’s ruling party, informed local media that the government is organizing assistance across “all levels” as a response to the cyclone. During a Sunday visit to Cabo Delgado, identified as one of the most severely impacted regions, Chapo stated that the government is collaborating with the INGD to facilitate rebuilding efforts for those affected in the provinces of Mecúfi, Nampula, Memba, and Niassa. In Mayotte, Chido represented the most severe storm to impact the archipelago in 90 years, causing tens of thousands of residents to grapple with the aftermath of the disaster. The interior ministry, in its most recent update, verified that 35 individuals had perished. Mayotte’s prefect had previously informed local media that the number of fatalities might increase substantially once the extent of the damage was thoroughly evaluated, cautioning that it would “definitely be several hundred” and potentially reach thousands. Over 1,300 officers were dispatched to assist the local populace. A week later, numerous residents continue to be without basic necessities, although running water is progressively being restored to the territory’s capital. The ministry has recommended that individuals boil water for three minutes prior to consumption. Approximately 100 tonnes of equipment are being supplied daily, according to the ministry, following the establishment of an air bridge connecting Mayotte, Reunion, and mainland France. Interior minister Bruno Retailleau announced in a Friday statement that 80 tonnes of food and 50 tonnes of water were distributed throughout Mayotte on that particular day. Tropical cyclones are distinguished by exceptionally high wind velocities, intense precipitation, and storm surges, which involve temporary increases in sea levels. These phenomena frequently result in extensive damage and inundation. The INGD stated that the cyclone “highlights once again, the vulnerability of social infrastructures to climate change and the need for resilient planning to mitigate future impacts”. Determining the precise effect of climate change on specific tropical cyclones can be difficult because of the intricate nature of these storm systems. Nevertheless, increasing temperatures demonstrably influence these storms. The IPCC, the UN’s climate organization, previously indicated “high confidence” that human activities have played a role in the rise of precipitation linked to tropical cyclones, and “medium confidence” that humans have contributed to the increased likelihood of a tropical cyclone being more intense.
