A cyclist has appealed to both law enforcement and parliamentary representatives, advocating for increased measures following the distressing theft of his bicycle, valued at £1,500. Phil Gallon, a resident of Saltburn, Teesside, had undertaken a 3,700-mile (6,000km) journey to Turkey, seeking solace after the passing of his wife. Upon his return to the UK, his bicycle was stolen in Brighton while he was awaiting a train. Mr. Gallon stated he notified Sussex Police about the theft, yet perceived that the incident report received merely superficial consideration. The BBC sought a statement from Sussex Police. The force had previously released a declaration indicating it was carrying out investigations using CCTV footage. Mr. Gallon, formerly a firefighter, experienced the loss of his wife, Carla, to cancer in April of the current year. He recounted contacting the police immediately after the theft occurred. He recounted, “I literally had 10 minutes to get to the train, as well as the feeling of devastation and thinking ‘what am I going to do?'” Less than an hour later, he received a text message from the police service stating there was “no indication” of any CCTV footage capturing the incident. According to Mr. Gallon, the police informed him they intended to “file” the case. He reflected, “I thought, ‘in an hour, have they checked this out?'” He commented, “If the police were honest and said we don’t have time to investigate such crimes then OK – but it was like almost they pay lip service to it.” He concluded, “It shows with bike theft, you’ve just got to accept it, take it on the chin.” In England and Wales, most bicycle thefts reported to law enforcement over the last five years have not led to any charges being filed. Police data examined by the BBC indicates that fewer than 3% of reported bicycle thefts since 2019 have culminated in a charge or summons. The BBC has contacted Sussex Police for their response. The force had previously released a statement concerning the theft, which stated: “Police are conducting CCTV inquiries after a bike was stolen from outside a noodle shop in Queen’s Road, Brighton, at around noon on 28 November.” The stolen bicycle is a light green Giant Revolt model, equipped with four panniers. The statement added: “If anyone has information they should contact police online or call 101.” For updates, follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
