Complimentary bike lights and reflective equipment are being distributed as part of a cycling safety campaign. The initiative, named Bike Lights for Dark Nights, receives funding from the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner and plans to host a series of informational gatherings along prominent commuter paths throughout the city. Personnel from the council, police officers, and Safer Roads Humber staff members will offer guidance alongside the safety accessories. Data from the Department for Transport indicates that 15,000 cyclists sustained injuries on roads across the UK in 2023, with 92 resulting in fatalities. Councillor Mark Ieronimo stated that road safety “is everybody’s responsibility”. He further commented, “Cyclists should aim to be as visible as possible when riding around the city.” He added, “But it is also important that motorists and all members of the travelling public look out for each other, too.” A total of five events are scheduled for December and January, with specific locations and dates to be disclosed at a later time.
