The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is currently evaluating whether to file charges against Member of Parliament Mike Amesbury. This follows the emergence of video footage that reportedly shows him striking a man, causing him to fall to the ground. Cheshire Police issued a statement confirming that a file had been forwarded to the CPS. This action was taken after the 55-year-old backbench MP was questioned regarding an incident that occurred in Frodsham, Cheshire, over the previous weekend. Mr. Amesbury, who serves as the representative for Runcorn and Helsby, faced suspension from the Labour Party last Sunday. This suspension came after video footage surfaced, which purportedly depicted him continuing to strike the man while he was on the ground, with onlookers reportedly yelling “stop it.” Although he was not arrested, Mr. Amesbury underwent an interview under caution, having voluntarily attended a police interview session. A statement released by Cheshire Police indicated: “A file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service on Tuesday October 29 for their consideration and we are awaiting their decision.” The CPS acknowledged the receipt of the file but stated it could not provide a timeframe for when it would make a decision regarding potential charges against Mr. Amesbury. In a statement issued soon after the incident, Mr. Amesbury stated that he had reported himself to the police and pledged to cooperate with their investigations, while also affirming his commitment to remaining “an open and accessible MP for our community.”
