A report has identified numerous panels containing reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) in the roof and floor of a Surrey theatre, classifying them as a “critical risk.” The Harlequin Theatre, located in Redhill, has remained shut since September 2023, following the detection of this hazardous concrete. Reigate and Banstead Borough Council initiated a safety inspection to ascertain the extent of the issue and is currently investigating possibilities for substitute locations. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, council leader Richard Biggs stated on Thursday that a meeting with the head leaseholder is scheduled for December to evaluate the report’s conclusions. In response to an inquiry from the public regarding the matter, Mr. Biggs indicated that the report determined “almost every” panel across the theatre’s flat roof, pitched roof, and sections of the internal floor had been designated “red,” signifying a “critical risk.” He further stated, “That means that without significant remediation or removal of the Raac panelling, the Harlequin Theatre must remain closed for safety reasons alone.” He informed the meeting that the initial safety inspection was succeeded by a comprehensive building condition survey, also commissioned by the council, with its results anticipated after 3 December. Mr. Biggs also remarked: “Any consideration for Raac removal or remediation will undoubtedly impact on other elements of the buildings such as the heating and vent systems, meaning that we can not consider the costs of the Raac in isolation.” Previously, The Harlequin Support Group expressed worries to the council regarding local performances being left “without a theatre for far too long.” Readers can follow BBC Surrey on Facebook and X.
