Cremation services have been suspended at a city funeral facility following the discovery of structural problems within the building. These issues at Lawnswood Crematorium, situated on Otley Road in Adel, were identified after a “routine structural survey,” according to Leeds City Council. A spokesperson indicated that, following funeral ceremonies, deceased loved ones would be transported to crematoria in Rawdon or Cottingley, with ashes subsequently returned to Lawnswood for collection. The council issued an apology and stated that the timeline for the resumption of cremations at the site remains unknown. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that funeral directors had been informed about these temporary arrangements. A Leeds City Council spokesperson stated: “After a routine structural survey of the building, we have unfortunately had to suspend all cremations at Lawnswood Crematorium to further look into some potential issues found.” “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this causes at an already difficult time for families and loved ones.” The spokesperson further added: “We have contacted funeral directors to advise them on our interim arrangements so that they can liaise with the families affected.” “Ceremonies will continue as normal as these parts of the building are not impacted.”
