Coventry has seen the unveiling of plans for a seven-storey car park, designed to accommodate the anticipated influx of thousands of additional students by 2030. This proposed development, put forward by Coventry University, aims to establish 500 parking spaces at the current Lower Ford Street car park location, situated adjacent to the ring road. The planning application submitted to Coventry City Council included a statement acknowledging that the project represents a “divisive issue” but affirmed the university’s necessity to implement changes to ensure it has “room for growth”. The statement further indicated that the university anticipates accommodating an additional 6,000 students by the close of the current decade. Features of the proposed car park include rooftop solar panels, 48 charging bays for electric vehicles, and designated storage for 120 bicycles and 21 motorbikes. As per the statement, this facility would supersede the existing 110-space car park on Cox Street, thereby enabling the removal of other smaller parking areas across the city to facilitate the development of additional green spaces. The university expressed its expectation that the development would promote the use of electric vehicles and other environmentally friendly transportation methods among its staff and students, aligning with its objective to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
