During court proceedings, it was disclosed that a defendant, following the fatal throat-cutting of his mother, initially informed law enforcement that she had pleaded with him to commit the act and attributed the deadly assault to demons. Anna Jones, aged 44, was discovered deceased in her residence located on Station Road in Petersfield, Hampshire, approximately at 20:00 BST on May 9, 2023. Portsmouth Crown Court was informed that Anarlyn Jones, previously identified as Bronwyn Jones and now identifying as male, refutes the charge of murdering his mother during an episode of alcohol-induced fury. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old individual, residing at Jacaranda Road, Bordon, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, citing diminished responsibility. Sarah Jones KC, acting for the prosecution, stated that the defendant had informed police of prior abuse by both his mother and his deceased father. The court was apprised that on the day of the fatal incident, he reached the victim’s apartment around 16:00. The jury was presented with his subsequent statement to detectives: “I climbed on top of her, kept slashing her.” He further recounted: “I was full of rage, anger. I was brought up in an abusive childhood by both [mum and dad].” His statement continued: “I still suffer from what my father did. On occasions, my mum, she used to beat me.” The defendant asserted that his mother had implored him to end her life because of health issues, but subsequently altered her decision during the assault. The barrister informed the court that the victim “evidently put up a vigorous struggle for life.” Anna Jones’s death resulted from “overwhelming blood loss” sustained from her head, neck, trunk, and arms, as heard by the jury. According to the prosecutor, neighbours residing in the flat above subsequently observed the defendant “clambering up the stairs like something out of a horror film.” Ms Jones informed the jury: “He was covered head to toe in red… carrying a bottle of brandy.” “The defendant was repeating: ‘I’ve killed her, I’ve killed her,’ as he came up the stairs.” The barrister stated that he had already contacted 999, conveying to an operator conflicting accounts that his mother had either requested him to commit the act or that demons were accountable. She further mentioned that Anarlyn Jones reiterated these assertions to police officers at the location, attributing blame to the fictional creature Rake. The barrister remarked: “He may well have had a deeply challenging and difficult life.” She continued: “But the explanation for what happened that day is anger towards his mother and a choice to consume a significant amount of alcohol to unleash that rage.” The prosecutor informed the jury that while no alcohol was detected in the victim’s blood or urine, these tests were conducted over 20 hours subsequent to the incident. She also stated that the defendant was under the care of a community mental health team and was taking anti-psychotic medication when the killing occurred, though he was not anticipated to present psychiatric evidence for his defence.
