Jessica and Rick Sowerby, a couple, have expressed their pride that their infant, conceived through IVF, was delivered at the Royal Oldham Hospital. This institution holds historical significance as the birthplace of Louise Brown in 1978, the world’s first “test tube baby.” Their comments precede the debut of “Joy,” a new Netflix drama focusing on the scientists who pioneered IVF treatment, which derives its title from Ms. Brown’s middle name. Mrs. Sowerby, 32, described the birth of their child at the hospital “where the science came to life” as “amazing.” She recounted an earlier appointment at the Royal Oldham where she noticed a plaque commemorating Ms. Brown’s birth. “I was like, ‘Look at that, isn’t it amazing that we are in the hospital where the science came to life and now we have our little baby?'” she recalled. The Sowerbys revealed they had been attempting to conceive for two years. They underwent IVF treatment at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, but Mrs. Sowerby opted to give birth at the Royal Oldham. Mrs. Sowerby, 32, shared that she initially struggled to accept the necessity of IVF treatment, given her youth and good health. She acknowledged that while a successful outcome was not guaranteed, the treatment offered the couple a possibility. “And we are so grateful it worked for us,” she stated. The couple found the IVF procedure to be highly demanding. “Once that little embryo is back inside… it’s two weeks of waiting and hope… all you can do is just keep your fingers crossed,” Mrs. Sowerby explained. Following the sharing of her experience on Instagram, Mrs. Sowerby reported receiving numerous messages from individuals undergoing similar situations. “I thought this is really important that I be transparent because I would have loved for someone in those really early stages when I was waiting for the test results to tell me it’s a really good chance, just stay positive,” she added. Mr. Sowerby, 35, expressed appreciation for being able to discuss his experience with a work colleague who had also gone through IVF. He mentioned assisting his wife with the injections, ensuring her comfort and that she had all necessary provisions leading up to their baby’s arrival. The couple commended the hospital staff, describing them as “just wonderfu.” Mrs. Sowerby further remarked, “It is just so special, to have been there at the hospital that started it all.” The drama “Joy,” featuring Bill Nighy, James Norton, and Thomasin McKenzie, is available for streaming on Netflix.
