A second cinema closure in a single county has been announced within a six-month timeframe. Cineworld confirmed that its location at Sixfields Leisure on Weedon Road, Northampton, is scheduled to cease operations on 19 January. Additional Cineworld branches slated for closure include those in Castleford, West Yorkshire; Leigh, Greater Manchester; Middlesbrough; and both Poole and Weymouth in Dorset. The company indicated its restructuring efforts are aimed at “securing the long-term future and profitability of its UK cinema operations”. Cineworld, which now manages a portfolio of 90 cinemas, stated that the landlords of the six affected branches opted to reclaim their properties. The firm had previously announced five other closures in July, one of which was in Bedford. Jamie Sotomayor, president of Cineworld International, remarked: “The successful completion of our restructuring plan, achieved with the crucial support of our landlords, protects thousands of jobs across the UK and provides us with the financial stability to continue investing in delivering extraordinary experiences for our valued customers.” Separately, in July, Odeon announced the closure of its cinema in Kettering, with that branch scheduled to shut its doors in February.
