A councillor has stated that an urgent review of a motorway’s safety record is necessary after a series of fatal crashes. Noordad Aziz, who serves as the deputy leader of the Labour-controlled Hyndburn Council, has requested an examination of the M65’s accident rate in East Lancashire, with the objective of enhancing its safety. Instead of concentrating exclusively on the section within his borough, specifically between junctions five and eight, Mr. Aziz advocates for the review to encompass the entire motorway, including an assessment of its lighting provisions. This appeal has received support from Zak Khan, the Conservative leader of the opposition on the council. Mr. Aziz indicated his desire for the council to formally request from Highways England and Lancashire County Council “an urgent review of the general safety of the M65”. He further stated: “Given the frequency of recent accidents, including those occurring in daylight and at night, it is essential to assess this stretch for potential safety improvements, including but not limited to lighting.” He articulated that the purpose of this review should be to enhance overall road safety, diminish accident risks, and guarantee the welfare of all individuals using the road.
