East Lindsey District Council councillors have affirmed their choice to extend a prohibition on dogs accessing Lincolnshire’s acclaimed beaches. The council has reinstated a Public Space Protection Order for Mablethorpe, Skegness, and Sutton on Sea, which prohibits dog owners from walking their animals on the sand from May 1 to September 30. Violators of this regulation during these specified dates may face fines reaching £1,000. The council stated that this prohibition, which is in effect until 2027, helps preserve the resorts’ Blue Flag status. This designation acknowledges superior cleanliness standards and draws tourists, thereby bolstering the local economy. The initial ban was implemented in October 2017 with the stated aim to “foster responsible dog ownership.” A public consultation on the matter garnered over 500 responses. Some dog owners expressed that the ban was unwarranted, citing their practice of cleaning up after their animals, while others supported the measure. The Kennel Club indicated that its observations suggested beaches were often vacant during early mornings and late evenings, proposing these periods as potentially suitable for dog owners to exercise their pets. Councillor Martin Foster, who holds the portfolio for operational services at the council, stated that permitting dogs on the beaches at designated times was “not practical.” He elaborated: “Within those Blue Flag areas under the new order, we’ll be protecting the public with young families and trying to keep the beaches clean with our cleansing team, which operates early in the morning and late at night when visitors have gone. They operate machinery, which will also affect the running of pets along the beaches, so we want to think of the safety of the pets as well as the owners and make sure that everybody’s safe.” Councillor Foster emphasized that alternative beaches remain open to dogs throughout the entire year. He further stated, “It’s important to realise that we’re not doing this to punish dog owners.” According to Foster, the council has now harmonized the Blue Flag zones with the dog ban areas and enhanced signage to improve clarity, addressing previous misunderstandings.
