A council has turned down proposals to convert a traditional village pub into three residential properties. The establishment, known as The Nag’s Head, located in Yorkley Slade, Gloucestershire, ceased operations last month following the retirement of its landlady, who had managed it for 41 years. The redevelopment plans submitted by Lydney Developments Ltd for the site were rejected by Forest of Dean District Council earlier this week. The matter is now set to be reviewed by a planning inspector, who will make the ultimate determination. Green councillor Jackie Dale informed the committee evaluating the application that residents expressed feeling “like the heart has been ripped from the village”. According to Ms Dale, one resident conveyed that frequenting the pub for the past two decades fostered a strong sense of belonging to the village, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. She further stated, “The Nag’s is more than a pub.” David Sanderson, a local resident, addressed the council committee, asserting: “It’s a vibrant community pub.“Two skittles teams, crib, billiards, the meeting place for the cricket club and the footballers, the Mummers practice there and on Wednesdays, there was an OAPs club.“Thousands raised for charity, I could go on. The pub was, and once again can be the genuine asset of community value.“I ask in my submission for the council to designate it as such. Please do so.” The developers have lodged an appeal contesting the council’s ruling. A viability assessment commissioned by Lydney Developments Ltd contends that the pub is not financially sustainable, citing restricted customer capacity and a decrease in sales. Furthermore, they state that the building is in generally poor condition, with its kitchen lacking a commercial configuration and being of substandard quality.
