Council leaders have deliberated on proposals for a brass plaque intended to commemorate Armistice Day within a market town. The proposition was introduced by Councillor David Vasmer during Shropshire Council’s cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. According to Councillor Vasmer, the president of the Royal British Legion put forward the concept of placing a plaque on the pavement in Shrewsbury’s Market Square, the site of the yearly Armistice commemoration. Councillor Dan Morris, who holds the portfolio for highways, stated that the authority did not oppose the installation of a plaque, contingent upon the necessary funds being secured and the plaque being created by the town council and the British Legion. He verified that planning permission would not be necessary if the plaque was not affixed to a structure. He further mentioned, “The historic environment team can advise on the design and siting of the plaque to ensure it is appropriate for this sensitive location in the conservation area.” Vasmer explained that the plaque would function as a perpetual reminder of the annual Armistice Day commemoration and would designate the event’s specific location.
