A council is considering various options, such as themed markets, street entertainment, and planters, to attract individuals to the central area of a city. Peterborough City Council expressed its desire for the city centre to be “vibrant, welcoming, clean and safe” for visitors. The council stated that reconfiguring the area and organizing additional events would enhance visitor numbers and stimulate economic expansion. These proposals, which encompass an assessment of all street furniture within the city, are scheduled for discussion by councillors at a meeting on Wednesday. A report released prior to the meeting articulated: “Our city centre needs to be a vibrant, welcoming, clean and safe place people want to visit without the fear or perceived fear of crime.” The report indicated that efforts were already in progress to address crime in the city centre, including augmenting police patrols and deploying additional CCTV cameras. Over the forthcoming six months, the council intends to conduct an audit of all street furniture, which involves cleaning and repairing items as necessary. Furthermore, the council will explore the establishment of a new busking code for the city centre and promote the city to “quality buskers” and street performers via social media platforms. The initiative also aims to introduce a greater number of themed and permanent markets to the central area, and draw street traders to “identified spaces”. Existing endeavors are in place to enhance the city’s core, with Peterborough employing its own “city centre ambassador” responsible for interacting with businesses, relaying concerns, and pinpointing areas requiring tidying. The councillors are set to examine these suggestions during the meeting. For updates on Peterborough news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
