A Tudor country house is extending an invitation to visitors to contribute to its history by decorating tiles destined for its roof restoration. This initiative is part of an ongoing £3.3m repair project at the 15th Century Coughton Court, situated near Alcester in Warwickshire. Portions of the roof have already undergone restoration, alongside other maintenance work at the Grade I-listed building. The National Trust, owners of the property, anticipate the project’s completion in June. As a component of this undertaking, the charity is offering individuals the chance to personalize recycled tiles that will be installed on the roof. The National Trust indicated that participants may sign their names, write messages for loved ones, or commemorate a special date or event. Simon Pickering, operations manager, conveyed the team’s excitement about providing visitors “the opportunity to become part of Coughton’s incredible story.” He further elaborated, “For the first time, visitors can leave a lasting message on Coughton’s roof, which will in turn help to ensure the conservation of this special place for hundreds of years to come.” The trust has scheduled sessions for December 13 and 14, with bookings available through the charity’s website. Each tile is priced at £20, and all funds collected will support the restoration project. Mr. Pickering characterized the project, known as Through The Roof, as one of the most ambitious ever undertaken by the National Trust. He mentioned that the final phase of the restoration, aimed at “repair and preserve the whole building’s roof and facade,” has commenced.
