A Winter Woodland event planned for the Cotswolds has been called off, with the local council citing health and safety concerns stemming from an unexpectedly high level of public interest. Stroud District Council made the decision to cancel the event, which was scheduled for Stratford Park this Sunday, due to the significant public interest it had garnered. The event was designed to transform the park into a festive woodland, featuring elements such as snow, Christmas lights, and Santa’s sleigh. The council stated that the cancellation decision followed “detailed discussions” with both health and safety and event management specialists. Lindsey Green, leader of the Conservative group, expressed that it was a “shame” for families to miss out because the council had not anticipated the event’s popularity, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. She added, “I’m really disappointed for the families who were planning to attend this event.” The council further commented: “The safety of our communities is the most important thing and, as such, we do not feel it would be appropriate to continue with the event in the original format.” This decision does not affect activities at Active Lifestyles Stroud or Museum in the Park. The miniature railway and brass bands are still scheduled to proceed.
