Cotswold District Council, under Liberal Democrat leadership, has faced criticism regarding its annual expenditure of £250,000 on public relations positions. The council’s leaders have justified their choice to establish four new communications roles. According to the council, these new positions are intended to enhance communication and ensure that residents are informed about the “vital services” and assistance accessible to them amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis. Tom Stowe, who leads the Conservative group, characterized the decision as a “huge waste of money.” The Local Democracy Reporting service reported that Mr. Stowe also stated it was a “slap in the face” for residents. He further commented: “The financial difficulties that the council now finds itself in after five years of Lib Dem mismanagement are well documented. They’ve been pleading poverty, slashing services and clobbering residents with continuous increases to car parking, green bin charges and council tax as they desperately plug their budget blackholes and fend off the threat of bankruptcy.” During September, Cotswold District Council had previously alerted residents to potential increases in bills, citing concerns about bankruptcy. Council leader Joe Harris asserted that the Conservatives were attempting to distort the council’s initiatives to assist residents. He explained that the new positions were established to more effectively inform the public about essential services and support accessible during the cost of living period. Mr. Harris stated: “These new roles are about clear, effective communication—ensuring residents know about vital services such as cost-of-living support. We’re also aiming to improving communication around important issues like planning and development which is something the Conservatives have criticised the council for.”
