A coroner has determined that a man fatally assaulted his partner with a hammer prior to succumbing to a drug overdose. Law enforcement discovered the remains of Jonathan Parsons, aged 34, and Kelly Greer, aged 41, within an apartment located on Mersea Road, Colchester, during May 2023. An official inquiry into their fatalities concluded that Ms Greer’s death resulted from “severe traumatic head injuries” repeatedly inflicted upon her by Mr Parsons, demonstrating “murderous intent”. Lincoln Brookes, the Senior Coroner for Essex, stated that Mr Parsons subsequently misused several painkiller medications with the intention of ending his own life. Mr. Brookes determined that Ms Greer was unlawfully killed by Mr Parsons, and Mr Parsons’ death was officially registered as drug-related. Previously, Mr Brookes had characterized their deaths as “a tragedy on so many levels”. Both individuals’ bodies were discovered together at Mr Parsons’ residence on 30 May 2023. During an earlier proceeding at Essex Coroner’s Court, it was disclosed that both individuals had engaged with mental health services. The court was informed that Ms Greer possessed “vulnerabilities” and a background of substance abuse. On Monday, in his conclusion of the inquest, Mr Brookes stated that Mr Parsons’ demise was due to complications arising from multi-drug toxicity. He further noted that while some of these drugs had been prescribed to him, others had not.
