A coroner has indicated that the death of a man held at an immigration facility, awaiting deportation, is thought to have occurred under unnatural circumstances. Theophile Kaliviotis was discovered unresponsive by personnel at the Brook House detention centre, situated close to Gatwick Airport, on October 27. An inquest held in Brighton was informed that a post-mortem examination conducted on the 26-year-old, who was born in France, could not determine a medical cause for his death. Joseph Turner, who serves as the area coroner for West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, stated: “I have reason to believe circumstances of his death are unnatural.” Ken Jewell, a coroner’s court assistant, reported that Mr Kaliviotis was discovered by staff in an unresponsive condition. He further noted, “Despite best efforts, Mr Kaliviotis was not able to be resuscitated.” Eloise Palfrey, a coroner’s officer, formally identified the man, who was single and unemployed. Brook House, Sussex Police, the Home Office, Practice Plus Group, Serco, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, and a relative of the deceased have been designated as interested parties and informed about the inquest proceedings. An additional hearing is set to take place on May 13, 2025.
