Official figures indicate that Cornwall is the first local authority area in the UK to surpass 40,000 renewable energy installations. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), an organization responsible for monitoring standards for renewable products and their installation, reported that the county recorded 40,873 installations, encompassing technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps. To address the increasing demand within Cornwall, MCS stated that the count of certified installers in the county has increased to nearly 100. Following Cornwall, MCS identified North Yorkshire as having the second-highest number of installations with 30,688. Somerset ranked third with 29,988, Wiltshire was fourth with 24,237, and Aberdeenshire held the fifth position with 21,086. The MCS data further specified that Cornwall’s installations included 29,179 solar panels and 9,801 heat pumps. These heat pumps function by utilizing electricity to warm structures through the absorption of heat from the air, ground, or water. Councillor Martyn Alvey, Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, commented that residential properties employing renewable energy sources are expected to contribute significantly to the county’s objectives for carbon neutrality. Mr. Alvey stated: “We are pleased to see the positive steps in the amount of renewable energy measures being installed to homes in Cornwall, through retrofitting and other improvements to make homes warmer, greener and cheaper to run.” Cornwall Council issued a climate emergency declaration in 2019, affirming its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality as a local authority by 2030. In line with this commitment, the council indicated its efforts to boost locally generated renewable energy, with approximately 40% of the county’s energy reportedly originating from renewable sources. Additional initiatives designated by the council to support this objective involve the planting of 8,000 hectares (19,768 acres) of trees and hedges across the county, alongside safeguarding existing trees, woodlands, and hedges.
