A mother from Cornwall has established a sensory-friendly Santa’s grotto, which is preparing to open its doors to visitors this festive season. Katherine Blight initiated the grotto after her son’s 2018 autism diagnosis revealed a lack of suitable options for his needs. Located in Bodmin, this event, designed to be autism-friendly, features elements such as reduced music volume, a dedicated sensory space, and soothing color schemes for attendees. Ms Blight commented that earlier versions of the grotto garnered “some amazing feedback” and that the experience evoked strong emotions in her, making her “very emotional.” She stated: “Since having our son, it’s a big reality check actually not all children are just naughty. “There are other things going on and we shouldn’t just look and judge.”We had a non-verbal gentlemen come two years ago and he said his first word, which was ‘amazing’.” Ms Blight mentioned that her son encountered difficulties with the queuing system at prior events. She elaborated: “A lot of children cannot stand in queues,” she said.”They cannot cope with the noise, different voices, different smells or that kind of thing, so we needed something that was more laid back.” According to Ms Blight, her charity, Austism Friendly Events Cornwall, has received proposals to expand its operations by hosting a grotto in Plymouth this year, though she noted this expansion is contingent on securing funding. The organization primarily sustains itself through its own fundraising efforts and contributions. Ms Blight indicated her efforts to maintain event costs “as affordable as we can,” with tickets encompassing a gift, craft activities, and unrestricted entry to the sensory zone. The Santa’s Grotto in Bodmin is scheduled to operate on December 7 and 8, with tickets accessible for purchase online.
