Allotment holders facing eviction have described the situation as “a sad day” for their community, yet they assert their refusal to “give up”. A Liverpool-based landowner has issued a notice to Bath & North East Somerset Council, requiring them to vacate the site of the Coombe Down allotments in Bath. These allotments were established in 1894. Jaqueline Burrows, an allotment holder, stated that the other owners have become like family over 15 years. She remarked, “Our son was four when we moved here – he’s grown up here,” and further commented, “It’s been fantastic to create friendships.” She highlighted the benefits, saying, “It’s great for your fitness mental health and general well-being.” Ms Burrows expressed feeling “really very sad” at the prospect of losing all 64 plots, adding, “We would miss the sense of community.” Christopher Pearce, representing Friends for Coombe Down Allotments, indicated that they “knew it was coming” and affirmed their decision to “refuse to give up.” Mr Pearce stated, “I’ve had the privilege to work on this site for 40 years, I cannot believe it, it’s been a joy to bring home the fruits of ones labour.” He further commented, “I was surprised the council could not pull something out of the hat. It was a shock.” Mr Pearce concluded, “It’s a sad day for Coombe Down and I think for the rest of Bath, but we’re not giving up.” Although the Combe Down Allotment began operations in 1894, the landowner has now issued a notice indicating that the long-term lease is set to conclude in 2025. Bath and North East Somerset Council made an effort to acquire the land, aiming to preserve the site. The council reported that all attempts to arrange a meeting with the landowner were rejected through a solicitor, and plot holders received notices to vacate the premises last week.
