A serial perpetrator of romance fraud, who received a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence, has submitted an application to the Court of Appeal requesting permission for his sentence to be re-examined. Raymond McDonald, a resident of Peterlee in County Durham, admitted guilt to three charges of fraud by deception at Newcastle Crown Court earlier in the current year. The 51-year-old individual has been incarcerated multiple times over the past two decades for committing fraud and romance scams. A victim stated that their relationship with him caused them to endure “lifelong trauma.” McDonald’s criminal history is documented in a BBC documentary titled – Are we dating the same fraudster? Law enforcement officials estimate he has defrauded over 100 individuals, obtaining thousands of pounds. A recent victim, whose identity the BBC has chosen to withhold, commented that he “knows the legal system inside out.” “Ray lies for his own advantage,” the victim stated. They added, “The victims carry lifelong trauma while he gets the opportunity to shorten his sentence.” Prior to his re-incarceration in August, McDonald had been released from prison in December 2023 and subsequently encountered multiple women via dating platforms, defrauding them of money. Det Con Saad Sheban of Northumbria Police, interviewed for the BBC documentary, remarked: “People normally think ‘dangerous’ is somebody who can physically hurt you, make you bleed, but Raymond hurts people emotionally.” He further described McDonald as “a serial scammer who routinely preys on women who are just trying to find a life companion.” McDonald’s legal representatives have filed an application seeking authorization to appeal his most recent sentence. Should this permission be granted, an appeal can then be formally submitted for review by the Court of Appeal.
