Construction of a new rail innovation and training facility in Chesterfield is slated to commence in the new year, following the selection of a contractor by the borough council. This forthcoming venue, planned for construction adjacent to the Barrow Hill Roundhouse in Staveley, will provide specialized training, research and development amenities, and commercial premises for enterprises within the rail sector. Chesterfield Borough Council has announced the appointment of Stepnell Ltd to oversee the project, with on-site work anticipated to begin in early 2025. The centre, which is designated to be named the Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle, forms part of multiple initiatives receiving funding totaling £25.2m from the government’s Towns Fund. According to the borough council, the facility is expected to generate employment and skill-building prospects for residents in the area, while also reinforcing Chesterfield’s objective to become “a leading destination for the rail sector.” Council leader Tricia Gilby commented: “It’s great to see the project continue to gather pace, and we look forward to working with the contractor, and our partners, to progress construction of [the centre] early next year.” Completion of the facility is projected by the close of 2025.
