Worcester’s city council has announced the appointment of a contractor for the development of a new arts and entertainment centre, a step it has characterized as a “major milestone” for the initiative. The project involves transforming the Scala building, located in the city centre, into a significant cultural hub for various events and festivals. The council has finalized an agreement with Speller Metcalfe, a firm based in Malvern, stating that construction at the Angel Place site is scheduled to commence in early 2025. The council indicated that the appointed company will establish facilities for “live performance, film, workshops, courses and classes” within the structure, which originally opened as a cinema in 1922. Council leader Lynn Denham commented, “Creating a new arts and entertainment centre in Worcester’s city centre is an ambitious undertaking for the city council, so it is a major milestone for us to appoint a contractor.” Ms. Denham further expressed her satisfaction that a local contractor would be executing the project and ensuring a “high quality refurbishment.”
