The construction of a new leisure facility in Nottinghamshire is scheduled to commence in early 2025. Olympian Rebecca Adlington, a native of Mansfield, toured the proposed site in Bramcote on Wednesday alongside local councillors. Broxtowe Borough Council granted approval earlier this year for a project to construct a new leisure centre, which will supersede the existing facility located on Derby Road. Deputy leader Greg Marshall stated on Friday that the council anticipates having “spades in the ground” by the coming spring, with the building process projected to span one year. The new establishment is planned for construction at the Derby Road location. The deputy leader confirmed that the current leisure centre will continue to operate throughout the duration of the new facility’s construction. Following the presentation of preliminary plans to Adlington, Marshall reported that the Olympic swimming medallist expressed being “very excited”. He added, “It’s not every day that you get to meet a four-time Olympic champion and it’s lovely to have her approval.” Marshall further shared that he recalled swimming at the centre during his childhood, and while it remains in use by many, he characterized it as “tired” and “in need of change”. Although leisure provision is not a statutory duty for local authorities, Marshall affirmed that the council considers it ” absolutely crucial”. The new leisure centre is expected to serve swimming teams for training and competitions, alongside the broader community. He concluded, “We’re pleased to be giving the people of Broxtowe something to look forward to.”
