Construction has commenced on an £8.8 million council depot located in Grantham. South Kesteven District Council stated that the new facility, situated in Turnpike Close, is designed to accommodate over 250 personnel and a range of services, including waste management, park upkeep, and street cleaning. The authority indicated that this depot would facilitate the expansion of services to cater to the demands of an expanding populace. A spokesperson stated that the existing depot on Alexandra Road, which was constructed in the 1970s, has reached the conclusion of its operational lifespan. Councillor Richard Cleaver, who serves as the authority’s cabinet member for property and public engagement, commented that the present depot is no longer suitable for its intended purpose. He further remarked: “This is a significant capital investment that demonstrates [the council’s] commitment to future-proofing services for our residents.” Concurrently, council leader Ashley Baxter noted that the new depot would provide advantages for staff and contribute positively to the authority’s goals for reducing carbon emissions. He stated: ““The new depot building has been designed with energy efficiency in mind [and] will be cheaper to run.” He also added: ““There will be drying areas for staff, plus a canteen and training facilities, alongside an emergency planning facility and the infrastructure to enable increased use of electric vehicles, which will save money on traditional fuel costs.” The council confirmed that the existing depot will continue to operate until the new location is completed in 2025/26.
