Members of the Conservative party in the Welsh Parliament are scheduled to vote on Tuesday regarding their confidence in Andrew RT Davies, their current leader. Mr. Davies initiated this confidence vote following expressions of concern about his leadership from several Tory Members of the Senedd (MSs). This ballot is set to take place privately during the Conservative group’s regular Tuesday morning meeting in Cardiff Bay. This development comes after several months of internal dissatisfaction concerning Mr. Davies, who initially assumed the role of the Tories’ Senedd leader 13 years prior. Throughout this year, he has drawn criticism for remarks made regarding halal meat in educational institutions and for questioning attendees at an agricultural exhibition about their views on the potential abolition of the Senedd. Sources within the party confirmed the upcoming confidence vote soon after a small contingent of Tory MSs visited Mr. Davies at his Cardiff Bay office last Thursday. While none of the 15 MSs under Mr. Davies’s leadership have publicly demanded his resignation, other members of the party have done so. On Monday, Guto Harri, a former Downing Street spin doctor, stated that Mr. Davies ought to “look in the mirror and consider whether somebody else could do a better job”. The Conservative party currently serves as the primary opposition to the Labour-led Welsh government. However, a poll conducted on Monday indicated a decrease in their support, positioning them in fourth place behind Labour, Plaid Cymru, and Reform in anticipation of the 2026 Senedd election. The Conservative party lost all of its Members of Parliament in Wales during this year’s general election. Mr. Davies was initially chosen as leader by party members in 2011. He was removed from the position in 2018 but was subsequently re-appointed in 2021. Throughout his leadership, there has been a continuous discussion regarding the official status of the Welsh leader. While Mr. Davies heads the Conservatives within the devolved parliament, persistent demands have been made for the individual in this role to also be formally acknowledged as the party’s official leader across Wales.
