Expressions of sorrow have been extended for a nine-year-old boy who lost his life during an assault at a German Christmas market. André Gleissner passed away following an incident where a vehicle struck a group of individuals shopping at the Magdeburg market on Friday evening, according to a local fire department. A message on social media, reportedly from André’s mother, referred to him as “my little teddy bear” and stated he would “always live in our hearts.” The assault also claimed the lives of four women, aged 45, 52, 67, and 75. Law enforcement officials have placed a suspect in pre-trial custody, facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and dangerous bodily harm. A further expression of sympathy originated from a fire department situated in nearby Schöppenstedt. A statement from this department indicated that André belonged to the children’s fire brigade in Warle, located approximately an hour’s drive from Magdeburg. This children’s fire brigade is a youth organization for children aged six to 12 who are interested in firefighting. The statement conveyed, “Our thoughts are with André’s relatives, who we also want to support during this difficult time.” The youth fire brigade of Lower Saxony similarly honored the nine-year-old. In a statement, it declared, “Our condolences go out to his family, his friends and everyone who was close to him.” It further appended, “We stand by their side in these difficult times and express our deepest sympathy.” An online fundraising campaign, reportedly established to collect funds for André’s family, has garnered over €60,000 (£49,900) in contributions to date. The incident on Friday resulted in injuries to at least 200 individuals, with several remaining in a critical state. The identities of the four women who also perished have not yet been disclosed. Police reported that the vehicle crashed into the bustling market through an emergency access lane around 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Friday. Witnesses recounted leaping out of the car’s way, running, or seeking cover. Unverified video clips on social media depicted the car moving rapidly through a pedestrian area among market stalls. According to police, the driver subsequently rejoined the road and was compelled to halt in traffic, leading to his arrest at that location. City officials stated that approximately 100 police officers, medical personnel, and firefighters responded to the site. Police indicated that a 50-year-old man has been held in custody on suspicion of five counts of murder, numerous attempted murders, and dangerous bodily harm. Local media outlets have identified the suspect as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a psychiatrist born in Saudi Arabia who came to Germany in 2006. The reason for the assault is still unknown, but authorities assert their belief that the driver operated independently. German officials are encountering scrutiny regarding security protocols following information that they were cautioned last year about the suspect’s potential to be a danger. The Saudi foreign ministry stated it had alerted the German government concerning al-Abdulmohsen’s extremist perspectives, but no reply was received. Subsequently, Holger Münch, the head of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), informed public broadcaster ZDF that his agency had obtained a communication from Saudi Arabia in November 2023. He mentioned that local police undertook suitable investigative actions, but the information lacked specificity. He further noted that the suspect “had various contacts with authorities, insulted them and even made threats, but he was not known for violent acts.” Münch stated that previous investigations would require re-examination.
