Questions have emerged regarding the scheduling of road construction in a Somerset town. A project to replace outdated traffic signals and enhance pedestrian and cycling crossings on Hurdle Way, Taunton, is currently in progress. Somerset Council has characterized the work as “vital” and stated that its teams are committed to doing their best to “minimise disruption.” John Hunt, the independent councillor for Bishop’s Hull & Taunton West, commented: “They say they’re going to keep the work as low-key as possible prior to Christmas but my worry is any disruption there will cause chaos leading up to Christmas.” Hunt further remarked: “The scheme, once it’s completed, should indeed improve things but I am concerned about the congestion during the work.” Somerset Council indicates that the new traffic lights will grant increased priority to buses, and simultaneously, crews will be upgrading pedestrian and cycling crossing facilities. The majority of the project will be conducted using temporary traffic signals. While some brief evening road closures will be necessary, advance notification will be provided prior to these occurrences. Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste services, stated: “This vital project will replace old, outdated equipment close to the end of its lifespan, whilst improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.” He also noted: “We know there will be some increased disruption at peak times, we’ll do our best to minimise this, but we would also urge people to plan ahead, while the work is ongoing.” Completion of the work is anticipated by April 2025.
