Over 200 establishments in Devon and Cornwall are providing complimentary soft drinks to designated drivers throughout December. Vision Zero South West stated that the “Lift Legend” initiative seeks to “prevent incidents of drink-driving” over the holiday season. The road safety collaboration reported that in the previous year, 419 motorists involved in traffic accidents within Devon and Cornwall tested positive for alcohol during roadside breathalyser examinations. The organization explained: “Designated drivers simply let the bartender know that they are a Lift Legend for the night and, when purchasing their first soft drink, they will receive a voucher for a free one.” Vision Zero also noted that 1,946 individuals were arrested for drink-driving in the area last year, and 1,429 arrests have been made to date this year. Adrian Leisk, who leads road safety for Devon and Cornwall Police, commented that alcohol impacts individuals uniquely, making it “impossible to know exactly how many drinks will put you over the limit.” He advised: “The only way you can be absolutely sure that you are safe to drive is by not drinking at all beforehand.” He encouraged people to “Have ‘none for the road’ and make the most of the free drinks being offered by our fantastic Lift Legend venues.” Alison Hernandez, who serves as Chair of Vision Zero and Police and Crime Commissioner for the region, issued a caution regarding the repercussions of drink-driving. She stated: “If you are convicted of drink-driving you can expect an automatic one-year driving ban, penalty points on your license, a hefty fine and a criminal record.” She added: “There’s also the long-term impact to consider. If you drive for work, you could lose your job and your livelihood.” Andrew Turner, chief operating officer at St Austell Brewery, mentioned that the company accommodates thousands of patrons across its 45 pubs throughout the south west and expressed being “delighted” to endorse the initiative. Mr. Turner further stated: “As well as offering free soft drinks to designated drivers, our staff are also happy to call guests a taxi or advise on local bus and train times wherever possible.” He concluded: “Here’s to a happy and safe Christmas.” Additional details about the program and a list of participating establishments can be found on the website.
