The Knaresborough Community Land Trust, a local organization, has acquired a long-vacant property with the intention of refurbishing it for lease as an affordable family residence. Situated in North Yorkshire, the house has stood unoccupied for 12 years, prompting the Trust to solicit volunteer DIY assistance from residents for the undertaking. Upon its completion, this terraced dwelling on Heathfield Drive will be offered to occupants at a rental cost lower than the prevailing market prices in the area. According to the Land Trust, approximately £70,000 is required for the necessary repairs, leading to the initiation of a “Sponsor a Brick” fundraising drive. Christine Willoughby, a director within the volunteer-operated organization, expressed her aspiration that this initiative would mark the initial step in acquiring and leasing numerous properties at affordable prices within Knaresborough. Christine Willoughby stated: “If we can get people from our local community to give us volunteer hours, and get local tradespeople to come and work with us at friendly rates, this is a really fantastic opportunity for Knaresborough, for people to come forward and say we want to help people live in our lovely town.” Following the completion of the renovation, a board comprised of members will determine which family will be granted the £800 monthly tenancy. The not-for-profit organization welcomes new members and is dedicated to providing housing and community amenities, while also serving as the long-term custodians of the properties to guarantee that rental costs remain affordable for local employees.
