An exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of Wolverhampton’s Low Hill Estate is gathering personal accounts, recollections, and photographs. This initiative aims to delve into the estate’s past, tracing its origins to approximately a century ago when its initial residences were constructed, with subsequent modernization of these pre-War properties occurring in the 1970s. According to the city council, this exhibition forms a component of the broader Know Your Neighbourhood Project and is scheduled to take place at Low Hill Library in the coming year. Anticipated contributions of memories encompass experiences such as employment at factories like Goodyear and Guy Motors, attendance at local schools and churches, and recreational activities enjoyed at venues including the Clifton Cinema, Bushbury Arms, and Penny Bike Park. A “memories group” operating from the library has been conducting research into the locality, assisted by volunteers from the Friends of Wolverhampton Archives. Jen Lees, who serves as Wolverhampton Libraries’ project lead for Know Your Neighbourhood, stated, “We already have some very interesting material from the archives and from people coming to group meetings at the library.” She further added, “But we are keen to hear more memories of living on the estate and to see photos of the area from family albums.” Obaida Ahmed, the council cabinet member for digital and community, characterized the initiative as an excellent chance to “celebrate the rich history of the area and bring people together.” Individuals interested in contributing can contact jennifer.lees@wolverhampton.gov.uk via email or attend the subsequent group meeting at the library, scheduled for 14:00 GMT on 15 January. The Know Your Neighbourhood scheme, funded by the Department for Culture Media and Sport, aims to boost volunteering and address loneliness, according to the council. Wolverhampton Libraries received £86,000 to support social activities, including bereavement social groups, walking groups, and Diwali celebrations.
