A community-based microbrewery and bakery is preparing to recommence operations, having been compelled to vacate its former location due to a sinkhole. Equal Brewkery, which operates as a not-for-profit organization, moved from the Ipswich Road Community Hub in Norwich subsequent to the sinkhole’s appearance in May 2023. This enterprise, which offers training to individuals with learning disabilities and imparts skills designed to facilitate their entry into employment, transitioned to a previously unused shipping container that has undergone recent refurbishment. Founder Bill Russell stated, “The goodwill of a lot of people has made this happen.” The venture obtained assistance from the insurer Aviva, which aided in securing funds to convert the area into its new permanent base. Furthermore, local volunteers and various businesses also contributed, as contractors supplied materials and assisted with construction, frequently without charge or at a reduced rate. Mr Russell expressed that he was “immensely grateful” for their diligent efforts. The establishment’s doors are scheduled to open on Friday as a gesture of appreciation to its supporters, with workshops slated to resume on 9 January. Mr Russell remarked, “I am constantly impressed by the goodness of people; the way Norfolk has responded has been superb.” The operational area, measuring 40ft (12m) in length and 8ft (2.5m) in width, is outfitted to accommodate four people simultaneously. Skilled volunteers assist individuals with learning disabilities in not only baking and brewing but also in cultivating knowledge of business, marketing, and teamwork, thereby furnishing the requisite experience for securing employment. Beer produced by Equal Brewkery can be purchased in 15 retail outlets throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, with all proceeds being reinvested into the organization. The organization urged members of the public to reach out if they believed the provided training could be advantageous to themselves or a relative.
