A significant litter collection event was held at a local park to honor Matilda Pritchard, an 11-year-old girl from Leeds who passed away on April 3. Matilda, who died from a rare heart condition, was known for her involvement in a litter picking club and her passion for volunteering and environmental initiatives. The initial fundraising goal was achieved within two weeks. Her family stated that they are now nearing the halfway point of their revised £42,000 target, which aims to collect funds for the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The event occurred at Pudsey Park, her preferred location for litter picking. Her father, Steven Pritchard, commented that his daughter “would have got a kick” out of the day’s activities. Steven Pritchard remarked, “She absolutely loved seeing a bag full of rubbish and a clean park.” He added, “Since her passing we’ve been looking for ways to honour her legacy.” He further expressed, “And this, bringing friends and family and strangers together, she’s shining down on us and it just feels lovely to be here.” Matilda suffered from an undiagnosed heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Mr. Pritchard noted that she exhibited no symptoms of this condition until her death in her sleep. The NHS reports that ARVC is a rare condition, with an estimated minimum prevalence of one in 5,000 individuals. The proceeds generated from the litter pick will be directed towards Keep Britain Tidy’s Eco-Schools programme. This initiative educates children on environmental stewardship in their local areas, enabling them to create positive change where they reside, a cause Mr. Pritchard mentioned his daughter was deeply passionate about. Mr. Pritchard explained that his family initiated fundraising efforts as a way to channel their grief. The initial goal of £11,213 was chosen to commemorate Matilda’s birthday, February 11, 2013. However, this amount was achieved within two weeks, and the family has since raised over £20,000. Mr. Pritchard stated, “I didn’t know what to do and this is my counselling.” He added, “The support today and the wonderful feedback and messages from people around the world has been amazing.” He concluded, “Matilda would have got a real kick out of this.” Post navigation Visitors Name Dudley Zoo’s Bush Dog Puppies Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Secures Farm Property Within Nature Reserve
