Hundreds of individuals convened for the funeral of a jeweller renowned for his craftsmanship and contributions to the jewellery trade. Rajinder Verma, who operated Laxmi Jewellers on Wednesbury Road in Walsall, recently passed away at the age of 71. Meera Bhanot, a funeral director and family friend, characterized him as a true community asset and a legendary man “with a heart of gold.” Ceremonies were conducted in Walsall and Birmingham on Sunday, followed by a cremation service in Wolverhampton. Ms. Bhanot reported that the funeral was attended by members of the jewellery industry, community leaders, and countless people whose lives he had impacted, with over 1,500 attendees in total. She stated that Mr. Verma’s family had been involved in the jewellery trade for generations before their arrival in the UK. He came to England and used his initial savings to purchase gold, which marked the beginning of his business, and subsequently exemplified values of dedication and service, she explained. His family indicated that he relocated from India to the UK in 1976, from a village six miles from Jalandhar, in the Punjab, where he had lived a very humble life. “He helped jewellers all over the country,” Ms. Bhanot said. “He would lend them gold out of trust to help them open their own premises and all paid him back. He never expected anything in return.” She added that he assisted many people in the community, driven by his constant desire for “betterment for everybody,” and that his passing had created a deep void. Childhood friend Daljit Sharma remarked: “We were from the same village in India. My best memory is playing football with him, fighting, hugging, laughing and joking with each other. He was like my brother. I miss him. He was larger than life.” Mr. Verma became a highly successful businessman, Mr. Sharma noted, adding: “Most of these people here – they’re all business colleagues, all business people. He was an extremely successful businessman and very loyal, very honest. He deserved all the love he’s getting here.” Describing Mr. Verma as a “car fanatic,” Ms. Bhanot mentioned that a new Bentley was arranged for his final journey. Media screens were set up to allow the large number of expected attendees to observe the proceedings.
