The leader of a city council has successfully overcome a vote of no confidence, a motion that could have led to her removal from office after only two months in the position. Karen Kilgour made history as Newcastle City Council’s first female leader upon her appointment in October, succeeding Nick Kemp who had resigned. An effort by the Liberal Democrats to remove her was unsuccessful on Wednesday night, with councillors opting to maintain the Labour leader’s authority. The vote saw 37 councillors support her continuation in the role against 30 who opposed it, alongside one abstention. Mrs Kilgour’s leadership came under scrutiny last month after her predecessor and five additional councillors departed the Labour Party to serve as independents, resulting in the council being left in ‘no overall control’. Kemp had stepped down as leader in September, following revelations that he was facing a bullying complaint from a senior director within the council. The Liberal Democrats, who constitute the authority’s second largest party, formally introduced the motion aimed at her removal from office. Liberal Democrat Christine Morrissey voiced criticism regarding the “chaos” and “rebellion” within Labour’s administration, asserting that the leader lacked a clear mandate to govern and alleging that the ruling party was unresponsive to residents. Mrs Kilgour, in her rebuttal, accused the Liberal Democrats of attempting to “disrupt and divide us” and implied they had no realistic chance of establishing a “coalition of chaos” among the diverse opposition parties to unseat Labour. Labour presently occupies 39 of the council’s 78 seats; the remaining seats are held by 22 Liberal Democrats, 11 independents, three members of the Newcastle Independents party, two Green Party councillors, and one Conservative.
