Cambridgeshire County Council has confirmed that work to install a controversial bus gate on a city centre road has now begun. The project, located on Mill Road Bridge in Cambridge, was originally slated to commence on Monday night but was hindered by protesters. Council contractors secured the section between Mill Road and Kingston Street at 02:00 GMT on Friday, leading to the road’s closure. The authority stated that the roadworks will now proceed without interruption until the construction is finished. A statement on the county council’s website indicated that it had to consider “a different way to establish a safe working area” after the works were disrupted for three days. It added that the road closure is expected to remain in place until at least the morning of 16 November, or when the construction has been completed by contractors. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the council reported experiencing “vandalism” to the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in the area. It also confirmed that CCTV evidence of the crime has been shared with police. The council urged individuals wishing to protest to do so peacefully.
